Planning On Moving? Tips to get you ready for your next move!

As you may know, planning and research are just some of the work that goes into moving somewhere new. Below are some smart tips to get you ready for your next move with enough time to be fully prepared. Whether it be Atlanta specifically or the surrounding area, it’s important to have a guide to help you with the activities correlated with your move.

One Month Before

 

  • Study the moving and truck rental company choices to set a date for your move. 

  • Gather and assemble the appropriate school, medical and legal records.

  • Notify your local post office of a change of address either in person or online at usps.gov.

  • Inform any other key groups that your address will be changing. This includes your bank, credit card companies, insurance companies and subscription services. 

  • Plan a time to have services at your current house be disconnected as well as reconnected in your new home. This can include your phone, cable and internet. 

  • Any items that you decide not to keep can be donated or sold at a garage sale.

One Week Before
  • Make sure to confirm your travel arrangements for the move and make a helpful travel bag for your family members and yourself. 

  • Solidify all the dates and times with your moving company. If you have planned to move on your own, check on the moving truck arrangements. 

  • Complete all packing and don't forget to check certain areas such as, closets, garage, attic and basement, for the all clear. 

  • Put together a box that will include items you will need for your first day in your new home; this can be called the “First Open/Load Last” box. 

One Day Before

 

  • Accomplish a house check; it’s important to drain the water hose, defrost the freezer and finally disconnect and prep any large appliances moving with you. 

  • Have cash with you in order to tip the moving company or in case of emergency. 

  • Check if your hotel or temporary accommodations is all set up, if necessary. 

  • Confirm the moving company paperwork has the moving truck number or USDOT number, usually found on the side of the truck. This number will be the same one on the truck on moving day.
